Stop This Train...

Turning 50 years of age this week. Oh boy. Can you read the excitement contained within this writing?? :-) It’s a number that sounds larger than it feels. My aches remind me to try and stretch the body daily, and drink more water than I’m accustomed to. “A milestone!” they say…but I know we’re always surprised, yet thankful, when the page turns on another year of life.

I’m reminded of a favorite song called “Stop This Train” by John Mayer. A couple verses in the song state So scared of getting older, I’m only good at being young. So I play the numbers game, to find a way to say that life has just begun. Had a talk with my old man, said ‘help me understand’, he said ‘turn 68, you’ll renegotiate.’”

It definitely seems the renegotiation has begun. Things that used to be important…not so much anymore. They are replaced by new concerns and hopes that seem not so self-focused.

Connections to my family, friends and faith continue to gain in importance every day. I reflect on this past year where friends tragically lost loved ones, while simultaneously we somehow are able to wake up the next day and celebrate new beginnings. A recent ring design was just completed for a very dear client who lost her husband last year. She decided to add two matching Round diamonds on either side of her original diamond, as a daily remembrance of her husband and their two beautiful children they have together. It warms my heart to see clients who continue to wear their wedding rings, even after their spouses have passed. It’s this connection they cherish and want to remember.

As John Mayer concludes, “Stop this train, I want to get off and go home again. I can’t take the speed it’s moving in, I know I can’t…cause now I see, I’ll never stop this train.”

Here’s to celebrating the small miracles we often miss each day, and remembering to learn from our past pains, while praising the providence. On to another 50! With thanks, David
